Trip to England (Click on any image to load a larger copy)
Introduction
My parents moved to the East Midlands section of the UK in February 2001 and I went to see them in April of that
year, I went over to see them. My visit was soon after the Hoof and Mouth outbreak and our original plans to see
the Lake District was changed to visiting the area near Cambridge and Liverpool. My plans were to spend a week
with my parents in the UK then spend a week in Belgium.
I arrived in the UK on a Sunday at the Birmingham airport where my parents soon met me. We headed off to their semi-detached in Cavil passing through the town of Ashby-De-La-Zouch. After dropping off my luggage, we headed off the nearby city of Nottingham. Nottingham is famous for one thing - Robin Hood. So we along Maid Marion Way to Nottingham castle where we went through the city of Nottingham Museum. Later we went to the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, the oldest pub in England which has some of its rooms actually built in the wall of Nottingham Castle. The next day, we packed the car and headed southeast towards Cambridge and East Anglia. Our first stop was at the Imperial War Museum - Duxford. This is a great place to visit if you like aviation like I do. The museum contains British Civil a Military Aircraft as well as a collection of American Military Aircraft. On of the special aspect of the museum is that many of the aircraft are in flying order and are regularly take up. After our long visit to the museum, we headed off to our B & B in village of Burwell. Tuesday was a rain day, so we decided to spend the day in the to town of Ely and its famous cathedral. When we arrived at the cathedral we found that they had a special package that contained tickets for Ely Cathedral, the Stained Glass Museum, the Ely Museum, and Oliver Cromwell's House. We purchase the tickets and went to all the destinations. At the Ely Museum, we learned about the fens and how they were drained to make the rich farmland of East Anglia. We toured Cambridge on Wednesday - visiting King's College, Trinity College, and the Whipple Museum of Science. While I enjoyed visiting the colleges, I enjoy visiting Oxford (which I sent to in 1995) more than Cambridge. After our tour of the city we returned to my parent's house in Cavil. Our next destination was Liverpool, home of the Beatles. We left Cavil in the mourning and drove by the Bass brewery in Stoke-on-Trent (We did not make a stop but I plan to go there next time I see my parents) before arrived in Liverpool around 11:00 am. Our first stop was the Beatles Story a museum dedicated to the four most famous Liverpudlians. The museum is quite large and contains many interesting exhibits. After our visit we spent some time walking around the rest of the Albert Dock before heading off to our hotel in Waterloo. We spent Friday at the Maritime Museum at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. Liverpool is probably most famous for its port and the Maritime Museum shows the history of the port and its ships (including the RMS Titanic). After visiting the Museum, we headed back to Cavil where we had a traditional Fish and Chips dinner for Good Friday. I spent my last full day in the UK visiting Snibston Discovery Centre which is located in the town of Coalville. Coalville is also where my father works and where my parents live (well they actually live in the village of Coleorton). The next morning, my parents drove me to the Birmingham airport and I headed off to Belgium (See Trip to Belgium).
