Trip to Colonia, Uruguay (Click on any image to load a larger copy)
Introduction
On my forth day in Buenos Aires, Argentina (See Trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina) I took the opportunity to take a day trip to the town of Colonia, Uruguay - a well preserved colonial city just across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires. Due to its closeness to Buenos Aires some Argentinians live in Colonia and commute to Buenos Aires - making Colonia an unofficial barrios (neighborhood) of Buenos Aires. The hydrofoil ferry from Buquebus takes about 1 hour to cross the estuary and a round trip cost me 178 ARP or about 60 USD

I soon arrived in Colonia and after changing some money to get Uruguayan Pesos, I headed off to see the old town. The first place I reached was the Puerta de Campo (city gate).I next went to the Musuo Portugues, which had artifacts from the time Colonia was a Portuguese colony. After seeing the museum, I strolled around the town seeing the Lighthouse and the Rio de la Plata. Later I had a pizza for lunch, bought a few postcards (but was unable to mail them as it was a Sunday and the post office was closed), and spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on bench just watching the city.and it people. I walked back to the ferry terminal, and caught the ferry back to Buenos Aires. It had been a hot day and I spent the evening at my hotel.
